In-School Mentorship

Description

In-School Mentorship is a one-to-one encouragement program for boys and girls in Kindergarten to grade 8. A child and his/her mentor meet for one hour a week at the child's elementary school to play games and sports, do arts and crafts, or just hang out and talk. Volunteers commit to a minimum of one year (but they do not meet over the summer break or during other school holidays).

"Since his mentor has been coming one hour a week, his attendance and behaviour have improved dramatically.”

This program is a co-operative effort between school boards, local businesses and Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax-Pickering. It is currently in place in select schools within the Durham District School Board and the Durham District Catholic School Board.

This program is friendship-based and non-academic, which means there's no tutoring involved. It is simply an opportunity for children to develop a positive relationship with a mentor in the school setting.  This helps them to build confidence and self-esteem while also improving behaviour and attendance.
