In-School Mentor

You have a busy schedule and you're trying to juggle a million things at once. But you want to volunteer. You like kids. And you're responsible and caring. Does this describe you? If so, you've come to the right place!

The In-School Mentorship Program is a volunteer opportunity for men and women who have a little time to spare and want to do something meaningful and fun with that extra time.  This program is friendship-based and non-academic, which means there's no tutoring involved. So you can focus on perfecting your macaroni collage and monkey bar technique.

"My son used to ask "how many sleeps until Thursday?"  He would ask because that's when his mentor came to his school.  Now that he's older he keeps track of the days himself."

How it Works

Volunteer mentors spend one hour a week playing games and sports, doing arts and crafts, baking, talking or hanging out on the playground with a boy or girl at a nearby elementary school. Weekly visits take place on school grounds during school hours (normally between the hours of 8:30am and 3:00pm Monday to Friday).  Employers often allow their staff to take time out of the work week for community involvement.  This is the perfect opportunity for you to be an In-School Mentor to a child who really needs the extra support.

Application Process

After filling out an inquiry form, there is an application and screening process.  Once you are accepted to the program we match you with a child that fits your profile.  Of course, you will have the chance to agree to the match before your first session with the child.

Training & Support

Our staff guide all In-School Mentors through the orientation and training they need to develop healthy and positive relationships with the children.

Benefits

By simply listening, talking, being yourself, and having fun, you will help your mentee to improve in self-confidence, self-image, academics, behaviour, personal relationships and interest in activities.  Studies show that with an In-School Mentor a child is more likely than his or her peers to complete high school and pursue post-secondary school. That's something you can both take pride in.
